This week, the United States Supreme Court granted a petition for certiorari in the case of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Corlett. This case involves the constitutional question of “[w]hether the Second Amendment allows the government to prohibit ordinary law-abiding citizens from carrying handguns outside the home for self-defense.” The underlying case involves a challenge to the onerous rules in New York that prohibit open carry of a handgun, coupled with a burdensome and highly subjective standard for seeking a concealed weapons license, with the net result being a prohibition on defensive handgun carry by law-abiding citizens.
